Featured Friday | The Creativity Exchange: Cyndy Aldred

01.24.14

Welcome to Featured Friday!  To kick off my new series, I am bringing you a very special DIY blogger.  Meet Cyndy from The Creativity Exchange!

Cyndy is a dear friend of mine and so special to me because The Creativity Exchange was the very first blog I started following.  She is so talented and truly enjoys inspiring others to use their creativity.  Cyndy loves art, design and paint and is always finding new ways to bring these elements into her life.  I was lucky to snag Cyndy for a few minutes to ask some questions about her blogging experiences.

When did you start your blog and what inspired you to get started?

I started my blog as a hobby 4 years ago, back in 2010.  I really wanted a creative outlet and I wanted to share step by step tutorials of the projects that I was doing to help and inspire others to create and DIY.  I also wanted to be inspired myself through my readers and other bloggers.  I had no clue when I started blogging that the experience would turn out to expand my creative horizons in ways that I never imagined.  It’s truly been such a tremendous joy getting to know bloggers and readers from all around the world.

What is your favorite kind of DIY project?

Oh that’s easy – My favorite DIY project is anything that involves paint.  Wall paint, furniture painting or crafts.  Anything to do with paint or color just makes me happy.  Over the last year, I have really narrowed my focus on the blog to paint projects and color palettes because it’s really what I love to do the most when it comes to DIY.

What is your favorite project you’ve ever created?

Oh boy, thats a hard question to answer…I have so many favorites but I think my poster board Christmas tree cones is my favorite.  I saw these expensive tree cones at Neiman Marcus and spent weeks trying to figure out how to make them.  When I finally figured it all out and shared them, my readers fell in love with them too and everyone started making them.  I felt like we were all virtual crafting/DIY-ing together because everyone was sending me their tree cone pictures.

Where do you get inspiration?

It’s funny, I find inspiration in almost anything, especially when it comes to colors.  I went to Italy for the first time this fall and I think I have enough color palette inspiration to last me a lifetime.  My biggest DIY inspiration has always come from great design and I spend a lot of time keeping up with trends in design and color.  I love to to take a high-end design idea and recreate for a lot less in my home and then share it on my blog.

What are a few of your favorite aspects of blogging?

I love the connection and friendships that I have made with other bloggers and readers through this journey.  Blogging has pushed me creatively to do things that I didn’t know I was capable of doing.  Hearing from readers that they were inspired to create or DIY by a project or post that I shared is really my favorite aspect of blogging for me.  It’s really about the sharing of creativity in this unique way that just speaks to me.

Describe your personal style:

Because I love design so much, I am really eclectic.  I can appreciate elements from every design style. There is a side of me that is drawn to very ultra modern and sleek but then there is this traditional side of me that loves something old with a history and rich colors with depth.  I also have a family to think of that wants a cozy livable home.  I have to constantly force myself to balance modern and traditional. I call it traditional-chic.

What are some easy and inexpensive ways to spruce up a room?

I always tell people that updating the paint color of room, switching out lamp shades (Target has the best and inexpensive shades) and beautiful original art is such a great way to update a room quickly.  You can buy original art or a collection of prints on ebay super cheap.  You can place the prints ready-made frames from Hobby Lobby and it will make such an impact.
