Consistent Color Throughout the Home … or Not

consistent color in the home

I have found three images that have stopped me in my tracks SO much and I literally just can’t stop thinking about it.  Yesterday when I talked about oxblood + emerald, I shared the image above.  It’s one of the most stunning images I’ve ever seen.  Bottom line – it’s bold color done right.

I did a little searching and found the rest of the home on a Sweden real estate site.  That’s right, it’s not the home of some famous designer or blogger, this home was first found on a real estate site and went viral on Pinterest.  If  you think the above image does it for you, you’re about to have a heart attack when you see the next two images….. consistent color in the home

Probably the most gorgeous color combo I’ve ever seen.  I saw these two images first and had to see the rest of the home.  You’ll probably be shocked at the lack of color on the walls throughout the other rooms…

The white walls seem like a different home, no?

There is a yummy splash of color in the bathroom with that tub.  I’ll take it.

I love that the yellow doors open to the kid’s room.

This home consumed my brain yesterday.  My first thought was that the rest of the home didn’t reflect the three images from the bold hallway.  I think it was because I saw those three images first and just assumed the rest of the house would reflect it.  I quickly realized that a home full of that much color would be extremely overwhelming.  But all white everything else?  What do you think?  The white is certainly refreshing and maybe the hallway is the entry.  I do love one big statement, but I think the statement has to be the center of attention.  Good thing this home was on a real estate site and the floor plan was provided.

So it looks like the hallway is indeed a main hallway right in the middle of the home.  And for that reason I love their decision to not have consistent color throughout the home.  I think this home owner knew what he or she was doing ;).  Thoughts?

  1. My hallway is naturally a very dark place, very little natural daylight reaches so far into the apartment so it makes sense to decorate a space like that in dark, bold, warm colours to create a dusky sanctuary.

So often people say “you can’t paint a dark room in dark colours, paint it white to maximise the light!” When there is no light to maximise, however, it just becomes a dull, greyish space even if you paint it the brightest of whites and throw in a lot of light fixtures. Better to play to the natural nature of a room than try to make it into something it is no.

I think the apartment owners definitely knew what they were doing, making use of the natural mood in each space rather than trying to force spaces to be something they are not.

Of course, the beautiful architecture in the hallway with the high ceilings and the beautiful details make bold colours an easy choice. In those 70’s apartments that are so common in Sweden it might not work as well because there are no beautiful details, nor high ceilings, to accentuate with bright colours like the yellow.
